Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated to R&B, is a genre of popular African American music that originated in the 1940s. The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular.
When looking at a variety of music videos from the following artists above I noticed that the singer/group is always centre of attention and are used themselves to tell the story as well as make the music. I noticed that many R&B songs can be quite salacious or sometimes too grown up for some of their viewing audience, because most R&B singers are very well known, they become idols for the younger audience sometimes it is questioned when they bring out revealing styles because of the negative influence it could cause.
Other significant things i noticed in other R&B music videos are both genders are normally used, it is normally dark in the background with bright vibrant lighting focusing on the artist, normally the video is quite unrealistic or seems to look at something differently to most ordinary people would.
Below is a mind map that we all helped produce that looks at a variety of different music genres, we chose to look at R&B then narrowed down a few of our favourite artists which we then researched.
